"You don't tell a dead man what to do."
"Well are you sure we're dead?"
"What, you think this is a dream?"
"Wouldn't that be nice. Then I'd have a body to go back to."
"What do you mean? You have a body. I can see it."
"Yes but my wife can't. That's the problem."
"She can if this is just a dream."
"You need to drop the dream thing. We're dead."
"You brought it up. Let's go find your wife and ask her what she thinks."
"That will just prove my point. We won't be able to ask her anything."
"Sure we will. If this is just a dream, we can do whatever we want."
"And if it's not?"
"Then either we're dead or this is your dream and not mine. But it would be inconclusive either way."
"So if it's my dream and not yours, then we should be able to ask my wife what she thinks, right?
"Maybe your wife's dead in your dream."
"Oh Jesus Christ."
"Fine. I'll agree to go find my wife and ask her if we're dead. Happy?"
"No, because your wife is dead."
"No she's not."
"In my dream she is."
"That's fucked up. And also, we don't know if we're in your dream or mine."
"So you admit we're in a dream?"
"I...ok. I see what you're doing."
"Nothing. Come on. We're going to talk to my wife."
"That's the spirit."
"Hang on. Maybe this isn't a good idea."
"You are really something, you know that?"
"Hear me out. So there are three possibilities, right? A, we're dead. B, we're in your dream. C, we're in my dream."
"Well, there might be a fourth possibility."
"I was just getting used to three."
"Can you guess what the fourth possibility is?"
"I don't like guessing games. Just tell me."
"We're in your wife's dream."
"You know what's even more ridiculous? We could be dead in your wife's dream."
"That...well, actually, that would be the best possible outcome I think."
"You want your wife to dream about your death?"
"Well, no. But if she's dreaming about us being dead then we're probably both alive."
"True. But statistically, no more probable than us being dead. Or any of the other options."
"Yes, we could be dead and she could be dreaming about our deaths after the fact. But then we really would be dead. Which means my first point was correct. We are dead."
"Only in that last scenario. Which, I admit, would be a finite answer. But asking her isn't going to prove that one way or another."
"Because if we ask her and she responds, then we could just be in her dream."
"Ah ha! But it's a dream nonetheless. So we'll have solved it."
"Yes, it will have answered the dream question. But not the 'if we are dead' question."
"Hmm. You have a point."
"This complicates things."
"What are you doing here?"
"Came to see what all the fuss was about."
"We're trying to figure out if we're dead or just dreaming. Don't get him started."
"Don't get me started? What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that this would all have been a lot easier if you had just kept your mouth shut."
"'You don't tell a dead man what to do.' Who are you, Clint Eastwood?"
"Let me make it easy on the both of you. You're not dead."
"Well that's a relief."
"But you're not dreaming either."
"It's my dream."
"Julia, we went over this before you got here. Just because it's your dream doesn't mean we're not dead."
"Hmm. I suppose that is possible, although unlikely."
"You're regretting your decision to talk to us now aren't you?"
"Listen, can we just not talk about this anymore? Does it really matter?"
"I guess not."
"Either we'll wake up or we won't, right? If we're dead we're dead, and we're just ghosts who
apparently are just as cranky as we were when we were alive. And if we're dreaming, nobody's gonna remember this anyway when we wake up."
"So what do you suggest we do?"
"Let's get some lunch. I'm starving."
"A decision! You did it. I'm so proud of you both."
"For the record though-"
I've always been a fan of the absurdist play "Waiting for Godot," and this line of conversation just popped into my head one day and I tried to play it out in a similar vain.
